Hello listeners, welcome back to the Pink Notice Podcast! This week, we bring you the first part of our brief introduction to South African politics!

At the end of May 2024, South Africa held its seventh democratic general election. With no party winning an outright majority, some parties coalesced to form the “Government of National Unity”. The GNU consists of the ANC, DA, Patriotic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, GOOD, Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, Vryheidsfront Plus, United Democratic Movement, Rise Mzansi, and Al Jama-ah.

As you can imagine, these parties have different bases and policies—and what happens of the next few years may be quite… interesting. But before we discuss what fruits this new government ends up bearing, we bring you abbreviated histories of the two major parties in the coalition: the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance.

Before we get down to business, we have a conversation around approaching people you want to be friends with and having the time to maintain existing friendships—both with varying levels of success. If that wasn’t enough front matter, we also bring you a very very very very serious debate concerning toilets and what should be done with their lids.

We hope you enjoy our second deep dive and that you stay subscribed for part 2! As always, we thirst for your feedback. If you enjoyed the episode or have any other feedback, please let us know.
